A grammar component for semantic classes of nominals in HPSGs

In this paper I propose a grammar component for defining and picking out semantic classes of nominals across languages within the HPSG framework, thus providing the basis for accounting for grammatical phenomena that bear on this issue. I introduce a semantic object that includes the referential index, or discourse referent, of a nominal, as well as different kinds of semantic features associated with this index (i.e. cognitive status, referentiality, and partitivity). This semantic object can be seen as the discourse referent as it is "dressed up" in different kinds of costumes that make it recoverable and recognizable in sentences and in discourse. Semantic classes of nominals correspond to subtypes of this "dressed up" discourse referent.
